PTE speaking: the 5 mistakes that cost you 10+ points

After 8,000+ scored PTE speaking responses, these are the five patterns we see over and over — and exactly how to fix each one.

Speaking is where PTE test-takers leave the most points on the table. The good news: the patterns are predictable.

Mistake 1: Speaking too fast in 'Read Aloud'

PTE rewards clarity, not speed. Slow down by 20% and your pronunciation score jumps.

Mistake 2: Not using the full 40 seconds in 'Describe Image'

Most test-takers finish in 25 seconds and sit in silence. Use all 40 — even if you have to summarise twice.

Mistake 3: Forgetting the template in 'Re-tell Lecture'

Use the same opening every time: The lecture discusses… It primes the listener and gives you structure.

Mistake 4: Pronouncing 'r' like 'w' (very common in Indian English)

This single sound difference drops the pronunciation score by 10–15 points. Practice in front of a mirror.

Mistake 5: Panicking on unfamiliar content

The scoring is content-agnostic. They don't care what you say, only how you say it. Breathe, structure, deliver.
